On Tuesday, May 9th, Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to fund 1 mile of the Silver Comet Connector. The project, known in the 2016 SPLOST as Project X2415 was combined with a bridge rehabilitation project for Atlanta Rd. over the CSX rail corridor.
The cost of the combined project is estimated to cost $7,799,277.90 and the scheduled completion date is within 2 years. It includes a 10 to 12 foot multi-use trail along Atlanta Rd between Plant Atkinson Road and the Chattahoochee River.
This is a significant milestone for Connect the Comet’s mission to connect the Silver Comet with the Atlanta Beltline. Although this diverges from the preferred path along the abandoned CSX rail corridor, it does provide a protected dedicated route for cyclists.
This now means that the “Central” portion of the trail is now funded for construction.
The most important next step is finalizing the legal agreement between GDOT and CSX to allow the Silver Comet Trail to be extended from it’s current trailhead to Plant Atkinson Road. We hope to hear good news on that front soon.
