Connect the Comet Launches Grass-Roots Effort: Mobilizes Action Committe
Since mid-2013, Connect the Comet has been focused on working with government leaders to bring
about the vision of finishing the Silver Comet Trail and connecting it into the Atlanta trail system from its
current trailhead in Smyrna, GA. However, timelines are long and the demonstration of support is critical to success of this project. Connect the Comet announces the mobilization of the volunteer action committee and the official launching of the grass-roots effort focused around gaining volunteers and petition signatures to demonstrate support. This effort has shown success on its first weekend, and resulted in a groundswell of new support.
Connect the Comet is a dedicated metro Atlanta and Greater Georgia group working to finish the Silver Comet Trail by connecting it across the Chattahoochee River to Atlanta and the Atlanta Beltline from its current stopping point in Smyrna, GA. The Silver Comet Trail, combined with the Chief Ladiga Trail inĀ Alabama, is the longest stretch of paved trail in the United States. There are six miles of railroad track that have yet to be converted into trail to complete this expanse, and two decades have passed since the earlier rail was converted to trail. The remaining rail is out-of-service but not yet abandoned.
Completing the trail will provide both recreational and commuting options, and will help connect much of the greater metro region by bike trails. Connect the Comet is working to bring this rails-to-trails vision alive and has thousands of supporters. Join us!
